Through a partnership with Mercyhurst University WLEP will be broadcasting (RTV) on Mercyhurst’s student cable channel Laker TV (Channel 19 on Time Warner Cable) starting this Friday March 30, 2012. I can’t thank Brian Sheridan, faculty adviser to Laker TV, and Mercyhurst University enough for working with me to put WLEP on cable.

I look forward to working with them even more in the future!

Below is the text of a press release sent out by Mercyhurst University today.

LAKER TV BEGINS AIRING RETRO TV THROUGH PARTNERSHIP WITH WLEP-TV;
NEW CONCERT SERIES ALSO DEBUTS

Family-friendly TV classics like “Ozzie & Harriet,” “Peter Gunn,” “Soupy Sales” and “Route 66” will soon be broadcast by Laker TV, thanks to a new partnership between Mercyhurst University and WLEP-TV, a low-power Erie television station. The arrangement makes Mercyhurst’s cable television station an affiliate of the Retro TV (RTV) network.

“These programs are classic and family friendly with many coming from the Golden Age of Television,” says Brian Sheridan, faculty adviser to Laker TV. “It gives Laker TV more regularly scheduled programs while still affording us plenty of airtime for our student-produced programing.”

WLEP, the newest TV station in the Erie market, is owned by Hapa Media Properties of Chicago. Kevin Bae, president of Hapa Media Properties, hopes this arrangement with Mercyhurst can lead to further opportunities for both the university and its students.

To celebrate this new phase of Laker TV, Friday will also mark the debut of a student-produced, in-studio concert by the Erie band “The Romantic Era.” It is the first episode of a new series on Laker TV called “Mercyhurst Unplugged.”

“The new series will feature local bands from Erie and surrounding regions, playing acoustic sets,” explains Laker TV manager Victoria Gricks. “College students love music, and this enables them to discover new bands or listen to those they already know. It’s like having their own personal concert.”

“Mercyhurst Unplugged – the Romantic Era” airs at 8 and 11 p.m. on Friday. It is rebroadcast Saturday at 9 p.m. and Sunday at midnight. Additional telecasts will occur throughout the following week.

Besides this new concert series, other series on the new Laker TV include “I Spy,” “The Saint,” “Highway to Heaven,” “Lassie,” and “Daniel Boone.” When programming is not being telecast, Laker TV will continue to serve as an announcement board for all local non-profit groups, clubs and organizations.
Laker TV is seen on Time Warner Cable, Channel 19, in Erie City and Corry. For more information, contact Brian Sheridan at 824-2464 or bsheridan@mercyhurst.edu

I was able to fix the problem with no audio on the SAP/MTS audio streams. SAP stands for Secondary Audio Program and MTS stands for Multichannel Television Sound but on your television they essentially mean the same thing. The original purpose of this audio feed was so other languages could be simulcast along with the video allowing for multilingual people to hear programming in their own language. It never worked out that way and thus left this extra audio to deal with and confuse the viewer. If you look carefully, you might see a button on your remote labled SAP or MTS and when you press that it changes the audio being received to that secondary channel.

Prior to today, WLEP has not fed that audio channel (because I didn’t know how) and that led to a lot of confusion where people would tune into the station and not realize they had selected SAP or MTS. As far as I can tell all the other stations in Erie are broadcasting their main audio on the SAP/MTS channel so when channel flipping it made WLEP appear as if there was no sound.

Well, for channels 9.1 and 9.2, it’s fixed and channel 9.3 will be fixed on a future visit to the station. I didn’t have the proper cabling with me to fix the channel 9.3 SAP/MTS issue but I will have it next time.

One more mystery solved!

Sorry that I’m a day late (and a dollar short quite honestly) with the movie list. I thought I had set this to automatically post at the right time but obviously was wrong.

5 of the movies this month feature the actress Zasu Pitts. When I was searching for more films to broadcast I came across a couple of the films below. I remember hearing her name but have never seen one of her films. She is one of the few actresses that made a successful transition from the silent film era to sound.

Here are the movies that will be playing this month on channel 9.3:

And Then There Were None (1945) – Starring Barry Fitzgerald, Walter Houston, and Louis Hayward

Bowery at Midnight (1942) – Starring Bela Lugosi, John Archer, and Wanda McKay

Breakfast in Hollywood (1946) – Starring Tom Breneman, Bonita Granville, and Beulah Bondi

The Crooked Circle (1932) – Starring Zasu Pitts, James Gleason, and Ben Lyon

Dressed to Kill (1946) – Starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce

Escape by Night (1937) – Starring William Hall, Anne Nagel, Dean Jagger

Hell’s House (1932) – Starring Bette Davis, Pat O’Brien, and Junior Durkin

Niagara Falls (1941) – Starring Zasu Pitts, Marjorie Woodworth, and Tom Brown

So’s Your Aunt Emma (1942) – Starring Zasu Pitts, Roger Pryor, and Warren Hymer

Strangers of the Evening (1932) – Starring Zasu Pitts, Lucien Littlefield, and Eugene Pallette

The Woman in Green (1945) – Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce

Uncle Joe (1941) – Slim Summerville, Zasu Pitts, and Gale Storm

I’ve received a couple of phone calls this morning reporting no sound on channel 9.3. Unfortunately I’m unable to verify this at all because my Internet connection at the station is down at the moment.

I apologize for this and will get it fixed as soon as I can. If the Internet connection comes back I’ll be able to see if I can fix it right away if it does not the earliest I can solve the issue is sometime tomorrow afternoon as I’m planning on making a trip to the transmitter.

Thanks for bearing with me! Happy 2012!
